Sivankoil - Sivankoodal -Temple

HISTORICAL BACKGROUNDS :

It is considered as one the ancient places of the chola period. The inscriptions indicate this is “Sivan Koodal” and the deities as Sivakozhundandavar and Sivakozhundeeswarar.

Of the inscriptions found here, the one belongs the 3rd regnal year of Rajendra Chola-I is said to the earliest. Hence the temple here is said to have belonged to the period of Rajendra Chola. Inscriptions belongs to the period of Kulothunga Chola I and Vikrama Chola indicate gifting and sale of lands. Also there are reference about the gifting of land by Vikrama Chola for making urchava murthi, uthiradam of month of Ani on his birthday. The vimana of this temple has been renovated during the period of Vikrama Chola. A temple for the Goddess Maraganthavalli Nachiyaar was built in the 13th Century, and denotions were given by Vijayakanda Gopalan for constructing this temple.
