Projects

  • Experimental Research and Modelling of Magnetorheological Brakes (Sponsored by DST)
  • Design and Development of Novel Type Maintenance Free Bearings (Sponsored by CSIR)
  • Course Material Development on Engineering Design (Sponsored by Ireo Management Pvt Limited)

  • Experimental Design Evaluation of Engine Journal Bearing: In this project a single-cylinder 11-HP engine was equipped with two proximity sensors, to measure the oil film thickness developed in big-end connecting rod bearing. In addition flow meter was used to measure the flow rate. Eight thermocouples with temperature scanner were applied to measure the crankshaft-bearing interface temperature”. Oil hole location was optimized to minimize temperature rise and flow rate.

  • Finite Element Analysis of Turbine Coupling Hub and Comparison with the Results obtained by M/s BHEL.

  • Innovative Tribo-Design: In this project, TRIZ guidelines, tribological knowledge and axiomatic design were united to get an overall successful design. Through this project a new design methodology was initiated and taught to undergraduate students. Within four months, three patents were filed by students.

  • Design of Vibration Damper using Actively Controlled Lubricants: A variable viscosity magnetorheological (MR) damper was designed and fabricated. Initially MR fluid was purchased from “Lord’s corporation”, but later MR fluid and MR Grease was synthesized in-house. The synthesized fluid cost only 60$ as compared to commercial fluid that had a market price of 600$.

  • Magnetic bearings: In this project, “active magnetic bearings” and “permanent magnetic bearings” were targeted. A low cost amplifier was designed and fabricated for the active magnetic bearings. Also a maintenance free hybrid (hydrodynamic + permanent magnet) bearing was designed and fabricated.

  • Tubular Flyer for Jute Spinning Frame: The flyer, which is used in textile machinery, was designed to increase flyer life, and reduce its manufacturing cost. This project resulted in a patent on “Tubular flyer”.

  • Online Twisting of Continuous Spun Yarn: A textile-machine was designed that combined twisting and sizing of continuous yarn, which reduced the required-space and manual-labor.

  • Design and Development of Gear Test Rig: A test setup for “Spur gears” was designed and fabricated. A Matlab code was written to access the acceleration and displacement data. A synchronous averaging and Wavelet was used to diagnose the online condition of “Spur gears”.

  • Industrial Research on Face Seal: This project aims to increase the life of face seal used in steam-environment of paper industry. These face seals are being designed for “Self alignment”, “surface texturing for better hydrodynamics but minimum leakage”, “long life coating of ceramic materials” and better “Spring design”. This ongoing project will be completed by Feb. 2008.

  • Analysis of Cam Wear: In this short-term project, a design code was developed to estimate the life of cam under specified load, speed and lubricant conditions. Relative ranking of cam-material with life in hours was estimated.

  • Failure Analysis of Rolling element Bearing: In this short term project, the unexpected failure of four row cylindrical roller bearings of CRM was investigated. A short course was organized to train maintenance people imparting technical bearing knowledge.

  • Design of Clamp Shell body: In this short-term project, a gasket to minimize the leakage was designed.

  • Bearing Design for Air-Circulator: In this short-term project, a better bearing arrangement was suggested. With this new bearing arrangement power loss was reduced to 66%.

  • Optimization and Design for Assembly for “3-point Tongue”: In this short-term project, design of seat belt “3-point Tongue” was improved. The analysis of seat belt assembly helped in reducing material and manufacturing cost, and led to better performance under impact loading.

  • Design and development of O'Rings Software (Sponsored by Bony Polymers).

  • Design and Development of Hybrid Bearing for Flywheel Wind Energy System (Sponsored by CSIR).

  • Design of Internal Hub Gear (Sponsored by Hero Motors)

  • Design of Cooling Fins for the Electric Motor Employing Heat Pipe (Sponsored by TMEIC)

Research / Academic Contributions (Patents)

  1. Flyer for a Jute Spinning Machine
Inventors: H Hirani and S Dani, Granted: 2011
This patent embodies innovative features that make the flyer usable at high speeds. Considerable enhancement in productivity and efficiency of the spinning machine has been obtained with the use of this flyer. It has caused increased useful life, reduced the air cutting noise (thereby increasing worker comfort level), and prevented the hairing/ballooning of the yarn leading to overall reduction in costs.

  2. Low Weight, Low Noise and Energy Efficient Wharve Assembly for Jute Spinning Frame
    Inventor: H Hirani, Applied 2009, No. 115/MUM/2009
This invention incorporates design features that makes it light weight and very compact. The assembly is very simple in construction and is cost effective. The use of this assembly generates very low noise levels during operation. The main advantage is that it does not require re-lubrication. A significant reduction in power consumption is observed with the use of this assembly.

  3. Magnetorheological brake operating under shear, squeezing and valve modes
Inventors: H Hirani and C Sarkar, Applied: 2013, No. 2530/Del/2013
This invention utilizes Magnetorheological fluids and provides for very low frictional resistance in off-state conditions and very high frictional resistance in on-state conditions (when electromagnets are actuated). This invention ensures the less braking torque in off-state condition due to low weight percentage of particles which is a favorable condition for automobile vehicle. The major advantage of this invention is the reduction of the zero field friction heat when the vehicle is in running condition. The innovative feature of this invention is the application of compression enhanced shear yield stress to increase the braking torque when the magnetic field is applied. This happens due to increase in the on-state viscosity. A special purpose MR fluid has been synthesized and used in the MR brake to obtain desirable friction characteristics. During actuation, the weight percentage of magnetic particles increases from 50% to 90% in effecting areas. This kind of device can be used in automobiles, exercise equipments, hoists etc.

  4. Stator
    Inventors:
    H Hirani and K P Lijesh, Applied: 2013, No. 259883
This innovation provides a very high magnetic field strength due to the use of Halbach array arrangement of magnets. The main feature of this arrangement is that it increases the magnetic field strength on one side and cancels the magnetic field strength from other side of the magnet. A combination of axially and radially magnetized magnets has been employed. The main innovative feature of this stator structure is that the magnets are inserted easily in the gap between the gear teeth and number of arrangement of magnet can be achieved like (i) Radial polarization (ii) Axial Polarization (iii) Halbacharray in axial direction and (iv) Halbach array in circumferential direction

  5. Two speed Internal Hub gear between pedals of cycling devices
    Inventors: H Hirani, A Kumar and H Gupta, Applied 2015, No. 3793/DEL/2015.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a low cost two speed hub gear to be mounted on the pedal hub of cycling devices. The innovative design features facilitates smooth transition from one gear to another. The advantage of the invention is in providing an enclosed maintenance free gear assembly. This invention reduces friction between rotating components. The design is compact due to the use of custom made bearings.
