Abstract:

There are various technologies already available for the removal of arsenic from drinking water but there is always a question mark in the safe disposal of arsenic sludge generated from arsenic sludge. The generated arsenic sludge has the potential to leach back and contaminate the ground water again. A physico-chemical treatment process has been adopted for the treatment of the arsenic contaminated sludge. Initially, a thermal treatment has been adopted to enlargement of the adsorbent pores followed by chemical treatment for easy extraction of adsorbed arsenic from the untreated sludge particles.Different range of thermal level, amount of arsenic sludge, concentration of the extraction solvent has been employed to carry out the experiment. Approximately 85% of arsenic has been extracted from the contaminated sludge which get produced arsenic salt by the addition of low cost chemicals. Moreover, thermo-chemical treated sludge also removed 90 % of arsenic from contaminated water which makes the process cost effective in contrast of reuse of waste sludge. Present invention examines the feasibility of arsenic-rich sludge treatment in a thermo-chemical way and subsequently uses the treated sludge for arsenic treatment thereby meeting the demands for cost effective sustainable development.
