Melur CWSS
Melur CWSS Project with River Cauvery as source has been implemented to provide safe and potable drinking water to the people of Melur, Avaniapuram , Thirumangalam Municipalities, Thirunagar, Vilangudi, Paravai, A.Vellalapatti, Alanganallur, PalameduTown panchayats & 1430 Rural habitations in Madurai district and SingampuneriTown Panchayat in Sivagangai district at an estimated cost ofRs. 784.00 Crore.(Atpresent ,Avaniapuram Municipality,Thirunagar TP, Vilangudi TP& 113 Rural habitations are now merged with Madurai Corporation).
Fund tie up for this project had been made with Rs. 189.00 Crore under NRDWP as a grant from Govt. of India , Rs. 311.45 Crore under MNP grant from Govt.of Tamil Nadu for rural areas, Rs.201.26 Crore underJnNURM,Rs. 3.28 Crore under UIDSSMT, Rs. 29.63 Crore as local body share and Rs.49.38 Crore under deposit amount.
This project is designed to supply 64 million litres per day and 84 million litres per day to meet the drinking water requirement of beneficiaries for the Intermediate total population of 13.94 lakhs in the year 2027 and for the ultimate total population of 15.92 lakhs in the year 2042 respectively.
This project had been implemented in two packages as below..
Package - I
From river Cauvery near Kulithalaii in Karur district, 84 mld of water is drawn from 3 Nos. of collector wells and collected in the common sump at Mettumahadanapuram and then conveyed to a Receiving sump at Kottaiyur through 1100mm Dia. pipes for a length of 101Km with two intermediate booster stations at Chinnareddipatti and Pannankombu.
Package - II
From Kottaiyur sump, water is being conveyed through pipe line length of 105 Km of Gravity main to Thirumangalam sump. Then water is being conveyed through a net work of pipe lines of 2294 Km and collected in 329 sumps. Further water is being pumped to 1592 Nos. of service reservoirs (Existing - 1520 Nos.,New 72 Nos. ) and then distributed through a net work of Distribution system (Existing – 2468Km , New 76Km) .
The work order for the scheme was issued on Package 1& 2 on 29.12.2011 respectively.
Now the scheme was completed in all respects and regular water supply is being effected to all 3 Municipalities, 7 Town Panchayats, and 1430 Rural habitations and now the scheme is under TWAD maintenance. At present 74.76 MLD of water is being supplied to the beneficiaries.
