Dharmapuri District Profile

  • Dharmapuri district is bounded by Krishnagiri district in the North, Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram districts in the East, Salem district in the South and R.Cauvery in the west.
  • The District lies between 11º47'40’’N to 12º33’40’’ N Latitude, 77º33'30’’E to 78º40'00’’E Longitude and has an area of 4498 sq.km.

Physiography and Drainage:

  • Major rivers of the district are the River Cauvery and Thenpennai River Cauvery originating from Karnataka State enters the district at Hogenakkal, and drains into the Mettur Dam in Salem district.
  • Thenpennai Year is the other major river draining the district and is ephemeral in nature. It originates from Nandhi hills in Karnataka, enters Tamil Nadu west of Bagalur and flows almost in a south easterly direction till it reaches Daddampatti from where it takes an easterly course.
  • Pambar, Vaniyar and Kallar are the important tributaries of Thenpennai Ear draining the eastern part of the district whereas the Chinnar and Markandeya Nadhi drain the northern part of the district.
